REAL LIFE DOESN'T HAVE TO GET IN THE WAY OF
TRAINING YOUR DOG
You will be successful with several 3 to 5 minute sessions a day!
An hour a day of "obedience" training
is a wonderful thing... IF you want your dog to behave for an HOUR a day.
Integrate training into your ordinary life with your dog, and good manners
become the only way to behave.
Your dog needs you to be his LEADER
- to make those rules clear to him in a way he can understand
- to make it worthwhile for him to CHOOSE to play by the rules
MANNERS for LIFE techniques WORK!

PRINCIPLES
DOGS ARE DOGS. Dogs do DOGGIE things. Since we humans don’t like some of those things, we must learn strategies to prevent the natural doggie behaviors we don’t want.
REWARD AND PRAISE GOOD BEHAVIOR. CATCH THE DOG DOING SOMETHING RIGHT. Teach the YES’s and strive to minimize the NO’s.
CONCENTRATE ON THE 6 - 10 THINGS YOUR DOG REALLY NEEDS TO KNOW in order to please you. This makes training EFFECTIVE, EFFICIENT, and FUN for both you and the dog.
DOGS ALREADY KNOW EVERYTHING we want them to do – sit, lie down, walk by our side, come to us, etc. We teach them a vocabulary of signals and cues so that they will do these things reliably at our request.
CHERISH YOUR DOG’S NAME. It is NOT a command and NOT a reprimand. Use the dog’s name to get attention and for praise and affection. NEVER CALL THE DOG TO YOU FOR PUNISHMENT.
TRAINING IS NOT JUST A PUPPY OR “NEW DOG” THING. It is how you live your relationship -- the benevolent lifelong leadership you provide.
DOGS ARE AMAZING. ENJOY your dog! HONOR his or her love with the gift of training.
